How to Make CBD Bath Bombs

In need of some self-care with a kick? Let cannabis bath bombs be your next at-home spa experience.

Self-care is what we do to deal with our daily stressors, and we all could use a little time to ourselves on a regular basis. Spa treatments can be expensive so why not create a relaxing experience at home, and with some cannabis infusions to boot? All we need is a few dollars, a bathtub, and our favourite ambient chill playlist.

What are CBD bath bombs?

Bath bombs come in all shapes and sizes and are densely packed with a mixture of baking soda, citric acid, cornstarch, and moisturising fragrant oils. When they hit the water, the opposing charges of the baking soda and citric acid create a slow and fizzy reaction that leave a dreamy and bubbly pool of delightful scents and colours that we can’t wait to dip into. And in case you didn’t know, baking soda is a naturally high alkaline substance which is known for its detoxification properties, and its natural sodium content and alkalinity provides a softness to the skin when mixed with water.

So why not kick these bombs up a notch with some CBD oil infused in the mix? With the addition of hemp-derived CBD oil, CBD bath bombs can add even more relief and relaxation to our soothing tub of suds. There are three types of CBD bath bombs we can choose from: full-spectrum (traces of THC), broad-spectrum (no THC) and CBD isolates (pure CBD). But, if you’re all about the entourage effect, full-spectrum may be your best bet.

What are the effects and benefits of a CBD bath bomb?

Unfortunately, there is no hard human evidence indicating that CBD bath bombs can do anything more than regular bath bombs. However, CBD has been tested topically and orally to treat sleep, anxiety, and pain. We also know that endocannabinoids have receptors in our skin so once we take that dip, those receptors are activated. And according to research, hemp seed oil is useful for treatment of many skin issues including eczema and acne, as it strengthens the skin and makes it better able to resist bacterial, viral, and fungal infections.

What we can say for certain is that warm baths are scientifically proven to improve heart health, increase blood flow, ease breathing, calm the nervous system, soothe muscles, joints, and bones, improve digestion, help balance hormones, and moisturise hair and skin. So, CBD bath bombs provide the perfect combination for an ultimate relaxation experience and we CBD bath bombers should just soak it in.

Make your own CBD bath bomb

Making a CBD bath bomb is easier than we think and we may even have some of these ingredients already on hand. Here’s a recipe to get us started on our first batch of bombs.

Yield: Approx. 6 CBD bath bombs

FYI, CBD content is generally measured in milligrams (mg) per ounce. The minimum amount of CBD for a relaxing bath bomb is about 25 mg. For pain relief, try using between 50–100 mg CBD per bomb. For deep relaxation and pain, try adding up to 200 mg of CBD per bomb.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • ½ cup citric acid
  • ½ cup Epsom salt (optional)
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • 2 ½ tbsp coconut oil, melted
  • 1 tsp water
  • 25-200 mg CBD oil or tincture
  • 3-10 drops of essential oil
  • 1 bath bomb mold (or ice cube trays, cookie cutters, measuring cups, and muffin tins)
  • *Optional: glitter, food colouring, dried flowers, herbs, etc.

Directions

  1. Combine dry ingredients (baking soda, Epsom salt, cornstarch, and citric acid) in a bowl and mix until smooth.
  2. Combine wet ingredients (melted coconut oil, CBD oil, essential oil, and water) in a separate bowl and whisk thoroughly.
  3. Slowly add the liquid mixture into the dry mixture, gently stirring as you add. Make sure to go slow, so it doesn’t fizz.
  4. Add your optional items to the mixture if you have them.
  5. Carefully and quickly fill the molds with the bath bomb mixture so it doesn’t dry out. Allow the bath bomb mixture to set in the mold for one hour.
  6. Gently remove the bath bombs onto parchment paper and let dry for 24 hours.

How to use your CBD bath bomb

The best way to use a bath bomb is to run your bathtub to its desired depth. Then, place or drop the bath bomb in the water. The bath bomb will take 3-4 minutes to dissolve into the warm water. Once the bubbles, scents, salts, and fizz have been fully released, you may slowly enter the water and simply relax. And if you’re really into creating a DIY experience, we recommend making our Healing Cannabis Tea with Canna Honey to keep you extra hydrated while you soak.

When it comes to how long we should soak in a CBD bath, there are no hard rules. Feel free to top off the tub with hot water when necessary but try not to exceed 40 minutes, especially if new to the art of CBD bath bombing. Oh, and be mindful of the product’s potency as ideal doses are different for each of us. We recommend that newbies start with the lowest dose, because when dosing with cannabis, slow and low is the way to go.
